Boris Johnson is capable of winning the next general election, a cabinet colleague insisted, as he said the ability to look ahead was a good thing after the prime minister said he was considering a third term.

Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis has thrown his support behind the Tory leader amid renewed criticism and plots to oust him after the Tories suffered two by-election defeats.

Mr Lewis said: “One of the things we’ve seen over the past few days is his zest and enthusiasm to deliver for the country.

“I think Boris Johnson is the right person to take us to the next general election. I think he will do it successfully.”

He added: “What I see is someone who has that drive and enthusiasm for what we want to achieve for our country.

“Having this ability to look ahead is a good thing.”

“It was a tough series of results for us. You get that halfway through.

“I think he is someone who is capable of winning a general election, of delivering for our country.”

He continued: “I want a prime minister who looks long term and does it with enthusiasm and focus. That’s what we have at Boris Johnson and that’s why I support him.”
