60 seconds and it’s clear the field is in shambles. The players slip, the ball does not roll. Fernandes almost lost his footing. Not great.

6 mins: Manchester United 0 Aston Villa 0

United have a corner on the left after Fernandes comes in from behind, Rashford finds it with a little flick. United with another corner after Sancho’s side volley to the back post was blocked by McGinn.

Excellent save from Martinez! Shaw’s inswinger was met by Maguire’s header who made good contact but the Villa keeper tipped him around the post.

A pretty bright start from United with Fernandes taking them forward. The first time Villa crossed the halfway line, they had a half-cry for a penalty after Fred ran into Coutinho’s back in the area. The pitch cuts pretty badly, it’s like an FA Cup third round tie.

Aston Villa got us started. Don’t adjust your set: this is how the pitch is uneven. Various sports are played at this stadium, there was a match 24 hours ago and it was hammered in Perth. Also a ridiculous kit clash with both teams in their away shirts.

The players are in the tunnel

Not long before kick-off in Perth. Stadium PA are trying to make United feel at home by playing This Is The One as the players go out.

Slightly different balance in United’s midfield today

Van de Beek for McTominay is more expansive, but the Scot played an important role in covering Diogo Dalot, who has been a big part of United’s attacks from right-back.

Expect Villa to play in their narrow 4-3-3 form that Gerrard likes. New recruits Boubacar Kamara and Diego Carlos start. The number of balls won by Kamara in midfield was impressive for Marseille, but there could be questions about Carlos’ discipline and recklessness in England. Alternatively, it could be a diamond with Coutinho behind Ings and Watkins.

Enthusiastic residents

Another nine months of waking up at all hours to watch United awaits. Magistrates are known to hand down more lenient sentences.

Both teams

Manchester United : De Gea; Shaw, Maguire, Lindelof, Dalot; Fred, van de Beek, Fernandes; Rashford, Sancho, Martial

AstonVilla: Martinez; Worthy, Carlos, Mings, Cash; Ramsey, Kamara, McGinn; Coutinho Watkins, Ings

They are a much stronger and more threatening Villa side than the weakened XI Crystal Palace managed to field in Melbourne. Should offer a tougher test for United.

Game continues despite Perth ground concerns

By James Ducker, Perth

Manchester United’s game against Aston Villa in Perth has been given the green light despite concerns over the state of the pitch at the Optus Stadium.

Heavy rain overnight and during the day in Perth wreaked havoc on the surface, with a source admitting conditions were less than ideal.

Ground staff worked over time to prepare the ground and came out with blowers trying to remove as much excess water as possible.

Parts of the grass were very dark and there were four patches of newly laid grass. A source said it would be “like an ice rink” if there was more rain during the game.

United technical director Darren Fletcher and first-team coach Eric Ramsay have been dispatched to monitor the situation closely.

Both sets of players had come out to inspect the pitch and check their footing and United manager Erik ten Hag was out 70 minutes before the game with Fletcher watching him closely.

After a final inspection of the pitch, organizers confirmed the game would go ahead as scheduled at 5:45 p.m. local time with a crowd of 60,000 expected.

Speaking ahead of the game, Ten Hag was happy with how his midfield and attacking side were developing, but worried about the depth of his squad over a long season and wanted to offer options before the window closed transfer on September 1.

“You need more attacking options. It’s vital if you want to be successful, it’s a really long season but we have time to fill that,” he told reporters before United finished their campaign. Australian tour with Saturday’s friendly against Aston Villa in Perth.

“We signed Eriksen for the midfield department, so we’re really happy with that. I’m really happy with the performance of our midfield and attacking department at the moment.

“But I also know that this season (has) a lot of games, the World Cup, so we need more options. You have a good team, but it’s not just about the team, you you need a good team to get the right results at the end of the season.”

Team news on the way shortly.
