Danniella Westbrook does not pay TV license fees

Danniella Westbrook has revealed she’s no longer paying for her TV license despite rising to fame as part of the BBC soap opera cast EastEnders.

The 48-year-old actor made the revelation during a panel discussion on the GBNews Mark Dolan Tonight program Friday, which focused on the value for money offered by the license fee.

Westbrook said: “To be perfectly honest I don’t pay for a TV license so I don’t watch the BBC. The days of Only fools and horses and the great comedy and the great drama that they did.”

The star said she found the organization Breakfast was “very stuffy” and said she often searches other channels for “different opinions”.

She added: “They have a very one-sided, very middle-to-upper opinion. It doesn’t really work for the working classes, I don’t think.”

Westbrook said she was a BBC ‘house’ star and was proud of her time there, but criticized the company for its handling of Jimmy Savile abuse and said she had seen a “huge change” over the years.

“In the late ’80s and early ’90s, it was a very fun, free place to work, and it was very good and very fair,” she said.

“But I think nowadays it’s become a lot more stuffy and, that’s what it is, but there’s a lot more channels on TV now, thank God, that people like me can work.”

Westbrook added: “I just don’t think they cater to the working classes, even in their drama and even in their soap operas with the plots and the things that they run.

“We don’t get things like Only fools and horses and In the buses and the big things we used to have more. It just doesn’t make TV like that anymore.”

Westbrook rose to public prominence for playing the role of Sam Mitchell in EastEnders throughout the 1990s and 2000s.

Asked if she still watches the show that made her famous, Westbrook said she had “never watched EastEndersand prefer ITV soap instead Coronation Street.

Sam’s role was permanently recast with Kim Medcalf when he returned this year, leading to Westbrook threatening legal action against the soap opera.
