Mum-of-3 dies hours before her 42nd birthday after a van driving the wrong way hit her car

A mother of three has died after her vehicle was hit by a truck traveling in the wrong direction on a Connecticut highway.

On Sunday, Monica Wilson died of life-threatening injuries a day before her 42nd birthday, according to a Connecticut State Police incident report. An 8- and 7-year-old child was in the car with her and suffered minor injuries, police said.

Driving a 2019 Acura, Wilson and two other cars were traveling south on Highway 8 when a fourth car “going the wrong way” (northbound) hit Wilson’s car “head-on” , says the report. As a result of their impact, “a chain collision occurred” between the fourth car and the other two vehicles.

Wilson was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, where she died. The children with her have non-life-threatening injuries, the statement said.

The driver of the fourth vehicle, Wilber Martinez, 35, suffered life-threatening injuries and is being treated at St. Vincent Medical Center, where he “remains in critical condition”. Martinez was driving a 2014 Ford E-150 that was uninsured at the time of the collision, according to the report.

His passenger, identified as Ananias Castillo-Icabalzeta, died at the scene.

The other drivers were taken to local hospitals and have non-life-threatening injuries.

The Connecticut State Police (CARS) Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team arrived on scene and Route 8 South was closed for approximately five hours. The incident is still under investigation.

‚ÄúDear Clients and Friends, We suffered the great loss of a member of our Broad River family over the weekend. Due to this tragic event, we have decided to close the hospital to ensure the wellbeing of members of our team,” he said in a statement. Facebook statement, adding in part: “We will release more details in due course. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this very difficult time.”

By a local community group, bridgeport fort, two of Wilson’s three sons were the kids in the car with her and had surgery Monday morning.

Messages poured in for Wilson on social media, with a friend sharing a series of special images on Facebook and writing“I still don’t want to believe it!!! You were just saying you can’t wait to see the baby. My heart hurts even to say it now… RIP and happy birthday Monica Wilson Everyone, please please continue my sister Aja Bruno and her family in prayer.”

Another one wrote“Today the sky gained an angel. They say if it rains after someone passed, it’s because the sky opened. Rest in peace Monica Wilson. You will be missed by many. And prayers for your boys, your family and the countless heartbroken friends who will miss you. An entire town is heartbroken today.”
