Rapper A$AP Rocky arrested at LA airport in connection with 2021 shooting

Rapper A$AP Rocky was taken into custody Wednesday morning at Los Angeles International Airport in connection with a shooting in Hollywood last year, authorities said.

The entertainer, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, has been arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement Wednesday.

Mayers, 33, was wanted in connection with a shooting on Nov. 6, 2021 after an argument escalated, authorities said. He is accused of shooting a handgun at an acquaintance, who suffered a minor injury and later sought medical attention.

Mayers and two other men ran after the shots, police said.

Mayers’ publicist and RCA Records attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

TMZ and NBC News first reported the arrest and details of the 2021 shooting.

Mayers had been photographed days earlier in Barbados with Rihanna. The high profile celebrity couple announced in January that they were expecting their first child together, although they did not reveal a due date.

Mayers released his last studio album four years ago and, like Rihanna, has become as well known for fashion as he is for music.

He came to international attention in 2019 after being detained for almost a month in Sweden following a street fight. He was found guilty of assault and given a “suspended sentence” which meant no further jail time.
