Amber Heard testifies that those around Depp protected his drug and alcohol use

Actor Johnny Depp has surrounded himself with an entourage of facilitators to protect him from the consequences of his drug and alcohol use, his ex-wife Amber Heard testified Thursday.

Heard was back on the witness stand to defend herself against her ex-husband’s defamation allegations.

Depp is suing Heard for defamation over an op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post describing herself as “a public figure representing domestic violence.” His lawyers say he was defamed by the 2018 article even though he never mentioned his name.

Heard told jurors about photos she took of Depp from 2013 in which he passed out. She said she took the pictures because Depp couldn’t remember what he did when he was drunk and denied what happened while he was passed out.

“He wouldn’t remember it, or he would deny it. There was no one to support me,” she said.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s libel lawsuit highlight public concerns

As Johnny Depp’s high-profile defamation lawsuit makes its way through the courts, public opinion appears to be tilting in Depp’s favor. This worries domestic abuse experts who fear it will make survivors think twice before coming forward. 2:03

Heard testified that she was repeatedly physically and sexually assaulted by Depp, usually when he was drunk or on drugs. Depp has denied ever hitting her, but lawyers for Heard said his denials lack credibility in part because he doesn’t remember what he did when he passed out.

Depp said Heard greatly exaggerated his drinking and tolerated his alcohol well. Depp’s friends, family and employees have taken a stand and supported his claim.

But Heard said that was part of the problem. She said Depp has a team around him that cleans him up when he gets sick and lets him go about his business without acknowledging the consequences of his drinking.

Heard is scheduled to take the stand all day Thursday in Fairfax County Circuit Court.
