Next year’s Oscars will be on March 12

Next year’s Oscars will take place on March 12, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Friday.

The date of the 95th Academy Awards shifts the show slightly from this year, when they took place unusually late on March 27, in part because of the February Olympics. But it will also leave in place a lengthy awards season that some say undermines drama’s Oscars.

The 94th Academy Awards didn’t lack for that, just not in the way the film academy had expected. On a night that saw Apple TV+ CODA Becoming the first film with a largely deaf cast and the first film from a streaming service to win best picture, Will Smith’s infamous slap in the face of presenter Chris Rock eclipsed the awards.

Smith has since resigned from the academy, which banned the actor for 10 years from attending the Oscars.

ABC will broadcast the ceremony again next year.
