Outage in downtown Sacramento caused by a blown transformer. SMUD is working to restore power

A failing transformer Thursday morning kept the lights off for several hundred customers in the Sacramento Municipal District.

The blackout is impacting downtown businesses and homes east and north of the Capitol, and south of F Street between 13th and 23rd Streets.

“If customers work in this area, they should contact their employer to verify the electrical status in their workplace,” the utility said in an emailed statement.

SMUD said a transformer in its downtown network vault exploded around midnight, affecting around 650 customers.

“Crews are actively working to restore power safely and quickly with an estimated time of restoration between 9 and 11 a.m.,” the utility said.
