British Columbia teenager makes history as first skater drafted into Canadian Hockey League

Chloe Primerano, 15, made history by becoming the first skater to be drafted into the Canadian Hockey League.

The North Vancouver native was drafted 268th overall in the 13th round of the 2022 Western Hockey League (WHL) Prospects Draft.

The Western Hockey League, along with the Ontario and Quebec junior leagues, form the Canadian Hockey League, the highest level of junior hockey in the country.

Although there have been goaltending appearances in the Canadian league, Primerano is the only skater to have been drafted to a team.

“I was just shocked,” Primerano said, speaking Friday on The first edition.

The BC teenager played last season with the Burnaby Winter Club under-15 program, registering two goals and 17 assists. She’s been skateboarding, she says, since she was three.

Now, she says she’s thrilled to inspire little girls at rinks across Canada.

“It takes a lot of sacrifice to get up early, go to bed late, do extra work, but it will be worth it,” Primerano said.

Humble and hardworking

Vancouver Giants general manager Barclay Parneta said the team is happy to add the strong player to its roster.

“Chloe’s play this season in the top U15 league in Canada made her fully deserving of this selection today,” Parneta said in a written statement.

Burnaby Winter Club director of hockey Richard Matvichuk said Primerano joined the club’s hockey academy two years ago after training at the North Shore Winter Club in her hometown.

Join Primerano on The first edition, Matvichuk described her as humble and hardworking, saying such a historic draft pick couldn’t have happened to a more deserving child.

“She has incredible leadership qualities. Her work ethic and determination to improve every day has not only made her better, but also her teammates,” he said.

The Burnaby Winter Club helped launch the careers of dozens of National Hockey League players, including winger Paul Kariya and goaltender Curtis Joseph.

Matvichuk called the place a “little hockey factory,” where young players focus on the fundamentals with the goal of playing in the major leagues.

It’s now the big leagues for Primerano and, despite the excitement surrounding her as the first female skater, she is calm and focused on the road ahead, which she hopes will lead to a place. on the Canadian Olympic team.

According to a press release from the Vancouver Giants, the first player to appear in a WHL regular season game was goaltender Shannon Szabados, who played for the Tri-City Americans in 2002.

Three players have appeared in Quebec Major Junior League games since the 1990s, all goaltenders, including Eve Gascon, Charline Labonte and Manon Rheaume.

In 2021, goaltender Taya Currie was the first player drafted into the Ontario Hockey League, when the Sarnia Sting picked her up in the 14th round.
